![]() ![]() As a consequence, the sisters are reviled by the villagers. ![]() We learn early on that six years previously, Constance was tried and acquitted for the murder by poisoning of all of the other members of their family. Narrated by 18-year-old Merricat Blackwood, the story unfolds of her life in the Blackwood family home with her older sister Constance and their Uncle Julian, confined to a wheelchair. Jackson is a masterful writer and her prose is cutting, with pitch-perfect dialogue, unforgettable characters and a plot that is simple and yet full of layered complexity. This book – a novella really – is a gothic suspense: sharp, precise, clever, witty, funny, moving, frightening, tense and dark. This was her last book tragically she died in 1965 aged only 48. My review of another classic that I have only just got around to reading: WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE (Penguin Classics 2009 first published in 1962) by Shirley Jackson, an author renowned for her darkly funny and shocking writing. ![]() Othello written by william shakespeare6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() The events of Othello are placed one year after the invasion of Cyprus. The Ottoman Empire spent several months invading the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, successfully. It began with the order of Sultan Selim II to invade the island, which the Republic of Venice controlled. Shakespeare situated Othello in the latest conflict, known as the War of Cyprus. Since the mid-fifteenth century and until the beginning of the seventeenth century, the religious tensions between Christian Venice and Muslim Ottoman Empire were ongoing. Othello was written around 1603, during the Elizabethan era and Shakespeare’s significant tragic period. Most of his famous plays were written at that time. William Shakespeare was the favorite of both monarchs who ruled at the time, Elizabeth I and James I. The aeneid david west6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It is said that the poet had instructed his executor Varius to destroy The Aeneid, but Augustus ordered Varius to ignore this request, and the poem was published.ĭavid West’s acclaimed prose translation is accompanied by his revised introduction and individual prefaces to the twelve books of The Aeneid. The poet died in 19 BCE of a fever he contracted on his visit to Greece with the Emperor. Virgil devoted the remaining time of his life, from 30 to 19 BCE, to the composition of The Aeneid, the national epic of Rome and to glory of the Empire. At the urging of Augustus Caesar, Virgil began to write The Aeneid, a poem of the glory of Rome under Caesar’s rule. Virgil composed pastoral poems known as Ecologues, and spent years on the Georgics. He attended school at Cremona and Milan, and then went to Rome, where he studied mathematics, medicine and rhetoric, and completed his studies in Naples. Upon comparison, this version (Penguins 'Seven Wonders of the World' series) is by far a superior version. In 2002 he revised his original translation of 1991. Virgil was born on October 15, 70 BCE, in a small village near Mantua in Northern Italy. This is a somewhat different version of David Wests Aeneid than the easily obtainable Penguin classic re-issue. Virgil (70–19 BCE) is regarded as the greatest Roman poet, known for his epic, The Aeneid (written about 29 BCE, unfinished). ![]() Snapdragon graphic novel6/11/2023 ![]() There is no way to close this book without a smile on your face. She makes you want to spot the unusual things in the world and bring them to light.Īnd, as an animal lover, I couldn’t help but fall for all of these cute beings featured in the story. Snap doesn’t just become close with the witch, she also makes a new friend in school-someone who is a little different, too. There is great diversity and inclusivity. Something you can find in First Second publications. Snap starts to spend more time with the town’s outcast and the bond they form is strong and opens the door to plenty of surprises. There’s a little note in the back matter about the materials used to make Snapdragon. Snapdragon doesn’t like to gossip and she doesn’t like rumours but she still can’t help but be afraid and wary of the old woman who lives alone, isolated by the forest, and who might just be a witch.īut one day, she is faced with the witch and that day will be a fateful one for both Snapdragon and the old woman. I love books that make me feel like the nastiness in the world is nothing compared to the beauty and magic that can be found in it. But in reality, Jacks is just a crocks-wearing, internet-savvy old lady who sells roadkill skeletons online-after doing a little ritual to put their spirits to rest. ![]() Genres & Themes: Graphic Novel, Middle Grade, Magic, LGBTQIA+, Friendship, Animals Kat Leyhs Snapdragon is a magical realist graphic novel about a young girl who befriends her towns witch and discovers the strange magic within herself. ![]() Mystery man kristen ashley free6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() You’ll enjoy it more. The other thing about her books…the women always kick ass! Kristen Ashley believes in sisterhood between women. She develops not only the primary love relationship in her books, but these women seem to become a part of or have their own posse…other women who are their sounding boards and are supportive friends who have each others’ backs. It’s frankly refreshing to not deal with petty nonsense that can exist between women in other books. ![]() As I’ve said, I’m the new kid on the block here on the blog so there’s something you don’t know about me: I’m a HUGE Kristen Ashley fan. Yes, her writing style has its quirks and to enjoy her books, you really have to like alpha males. Kristen Ashley is whom I turn to when I have a book-hangover, or when I need to spend time with “an old friend,” or just simply want to reread a favorite book. Whereas I will probably eventually review most of her books, I’m starting with Mystery Man. For anybody who does not know her work, this isn’t necessarily the ideal place to start reading. Others of her books happen prior to this (timeline wise) and some of those characters make cameo appearances in this series, but that’s okay. You can start here and go back without difficulty. I do recommend, however, if you read her books, you start at the beginning of a series and read that series in order. ![]() ![]() ![]() |a Helewise, Abbess (Fictitious character) |v Fiction. |a D'Acquin, Josse (Fictitious character) |v Fiction. ![]() ![]() |a Returning to her cell near Hawkenlye Abbey to help the needy, early thirteenth century abbess Helewise compromises her relationship with Sir Josse D'Acquin, who investigates the ritual murders of three men at the same time his son becomes involved in thecauses of the doomed Cathars.
